Mockoon

Mockoon is a mock api solution with given features:

  1. User-friendly interface: Mockoon provides an intuitive and easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) that enables developers to set up mock APIs without the need for complex configurations or coding.
  2. Cross-platform support: Mockoon is available for multiple operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, ensuring developers can use it regardless of their platform.
  3. Mock RESTful APIs: You can create and simulate RESTful APIs by defining endpoints, HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, etc.), request and response headers, status codes, and response payloads.
  4. Dynamic responses: Mockoon supports dynamic responses using environment variables, allowing you to modify responses based on various conditions or data.
  5. Import and export: You can import and export API configurations, making it easy to share mock APIs between team members or store them for version control.
  6. Endpoint monitoring: Mockoon provides the ability to monitor endpoint usage, allowing you to track the number of requests, response times, and other useful metrics.
  7. SSL certificate support: You can enable SSL certificates to simulate HTTPS endpoints, ensuring that your mock API accurately represents the production environment.
  8. CORS and headers configuration: Customize Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) settings and headers for your endpoints, replicating real-world scenarios.
  9. Mock data generation: Easily generate random data for your mock API responses using various data types, including strings, numbers, dates, and more.
  10. Proxy mode: With the proxy mode, you can forward requests to a real server while still being able to mock certain endpoints, making it useful for integration testing.
  11. Request and response logging: Mockoon can log incoming requests and outgoing responses, helping you to analyze and troubleshoot API interactions.
  12. Environment variables: Utilize environment variables to store and reuse common values in your API configurations, improving maintainability.
  13. Custom middleware: You can create custom middleware to handle specific logic or transformations in the request-response lifecycle.
  14. Response templates: Use response templates to generate dynamic responses based on request parameters or other variables.
  15. Collaboration: Mockoon allows team members to collaborate on API mock configurations by exporting and sharing the mock files.

Our Mockoon require

The current mock server we use is wiremock but it does not provide response templating and dynamic response generation. For that replacement we were looking at mockoon but it has some limitations to address because of which we can’t move forward with mockoon as of now

Requirements:

  • It should be supporting multi file data import for separation of API endpoints
  • It supports virtual folderings
  • Dynamic response generation

Issues:

While it supports all the other use cases, it does not support multi data import. e.g.: We need to download standalone app, import existing environment or create new, update the endpoint and then export back to production. This approach has huge single file if we have 100s of endpoints and also it’s hard to track changes in single file and merge conflicts

So, the conclusion is that right now we won’t explore mockoon.
