# Onboarding an Organization

> How an organization is set up in Governance.

Source: https://docs.cm.com/governance/guides/customers/onboarding-an-organization

Onboarding copies your organization from CM.com Platform into Governance. Until it is done, you can't use the Governance portal for that organization.

## What gets copied

| From CM.com Platform | Becomes in Governance |
| - | - |
| The organization's accounts | Accounts |
| Users and their organization membership | Users |
| Users' role assignments | An equivalent role assignment for each |

## Start onboarding

1. Open any account in the Governance portal. If the organization is not onboarded yet, you are sent to the onboarding page.
2. Start onboarding. It runs in the background, so you can leave the page.
3. Wait until the status shows **Completed**.

Only Platform Owners can initiate onboarding

## Statuses

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Not started | Onboarding has not been run. |
| In progress | The copy is running. |
| Completed | Done. The portal is available. |
| Failed | Something went wrong. |

The portal stays blocked until the status is **Completed**.

## Good to know

- Onboarding copies existing access. It does not create users or log anyone in. See [What Governance does not do](https://docs.cm.com/governance/guides/what-governance-does-not-do).
