# Change Logs

> The record of every change to roles, teams and role assignments.

Source: https://docs.cm.com/governance/guides/audit-logs/change-logs

The change log records each change made to access settings in Governance: who made it, what it was, and how it looked before and after.

## What each entry shows

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Time | When the change happened. |
| Actor | Who made the change. |
| Type | What kind of thing changed (see below). |
| Action | Create, update or delete. |
| Target | The name of what changed. |
| Before and after | The previous and current state. |

## What is recorded

| Type | Recorded when |
| - | - |
| Role assignment | A role is assigned, changed or removed. |
| Team | A team is changed. |
| Team member | A team's members change. |
| Custom role | A custom role is created or changed. Adding or removing permissions counts as an update of the whole role. |
| Invitation | An invitation is created or changed. |
| Onboarding | An organization is onboarded. |

## Use it to

- See who changed access settings, and when.
- Compare the state before and after a change.

## Good to know

- You need the Governance **Editor** permission to view it.
- Names are looked up when you view the log. If a person or application has since been deleted, its name is empty.
- Entries are kept for 3 months. See [Data retention](https://docs.cm.com/governance/guides/data-retention).
